Nach seinem höchst umstrittenen Wechsel zu Tata Steel im vergangenen Monat kam nun ans Licht, dass Pols in seiner Jugend Vorsitzender der Afrikaner Student Front (ASF) war – einer rechtsextremen Studentenorganisation, die sich gegen die Abschaffung der Apartheid aussprach. „Friends of the Earth Niederlande“, sein ehemaliger Arbeitgeber, wusste seit mindestens fünf Jahren von diesem Teil seiner Vergangenheit.

In 2021, he achieved a landmark victory when a Dutch court ruled that Shell must accelerate its emissions reductions. Following his highly controversial move to Tata Steel last month, it has now emerged that Pols was chairman of the Afrikaner Student Front (ASF) during his youth—a far-right student organisation that opposed the dismantling of apartheid. Friends of the Earth Netherlands presentó recientemente un recurso ante el Hoge Raad contra Shell y la Fundación Mens en Milieu, en un último intento por obligar a la compañía a aplicar importantes reducciones de emisiones a escala mundial.
